MTN Introduces Offnet Minutes, 50% More Data

By Inside Biz

MTN has introduced off-net minutes and further added more value to data bundles through a price transformation campaign called Nyus’ iVolume which was launched yesterday.

This means that the mobile telecommunications company is now offering its customers more data for the same price, which translates to increased value.

The newest feature that will excite customers is the addition of off-net minutes on weekly combos. A WOW Weekly combo for E25 now comes with 700MB, 30 minutes, and 5 Offnet minutes, while a E45 combo bundle gives customers 1.5GB, 60 minutes, and 10 Offnet minutes.

The Nyus’ iVolume campaign comes with an even more exciting benefit for MoMo customers who will get up to 50 percent bonuses when purchasing bundles through Mobile Money (MoMo).

This is the second data price transformation following a downward review reaching 41 percent which was carried out in August last year.

MTN’s decision to implement the price transformation is centred on meeting customers’ needs based on the reality that the internet has become a basic customer need, and that it must be easily accessible to all in line with the company’s belief statement that everybody deserves the benefit of modern life.

In his remarks when announcing last year’s price review, MTN CEO Wandile Mtshali said, “The internet is an integral part of consumers’ daily lives; from accessing learning to work and connecting with loved ones, the internet has become a fundamental need. If there’s one thing the pandemic taught us, it’s how much the internet is an enabler of how we work and live. That, along with the UN’s call for universal access to the internet in 2021, is a major driver for ensuring that local consumers have equal access to this global progress.”

Mtshali said that as a company, they have embedded environmental, social, and governance (ESG) in their strategy, which also calls for enabling access and reducing the cost of data.

“It is no secret that data is now part of our daily lives. As MTN Eswatini we had to ask ourselves what role we are playing in ensuring that we make the lives of our customers better” he noted.

In September 2020 MTN reduced the cost of postpaid mobile data bundles by 70 percent and prepaid packages by 32 percent.

This was done to improve the affordability of mobile communications in a country that had previously ranked as having Africa’s most expensive data prices.

Due to the price cuts over the past few years, today the price of a 1GB monthly data bundle has gone down from E150 to E99 and is also being accompanied by a 1GB free night bundle.
